UPS adds cargo capacity in Latin America

United Parcel Service Inc. said Monday it has added cargo-carrying capacity in Central and South America because of the area's growing economies.

UPS said that beginning last week, it boosted capacity by more than 50 percent on 19 weekly flights into the region by replacing a Boeing 757 with a Boeing 767 jet, which can carry loads about 50 percent bigger.

The flights operate between UPS's hub in Miami and Quito and Guayaquil, Ecuador; Bogota, Colombia; Panama City, Panama; Guatemala City, Guatemala, and Managua, Nicaragua.

Latin American economies have been helped by exports of flowers, produce and farmed fish, the cargo carrier said.

UPS shares fell 74 cents to $70.41 in afternoon trading.
