A new hydroelectric plant in Colombia could produce up to 2400 MW, which is sufficient to cover a fifth of the country’s energy demands.
According a report in El Tiempo newspaper, Hidroituango will become the biggest energy provider in the country as the authorities award it a concession for the large-scale hydro project.
Through this agreement, which is the first one of its kind in Colombia, "we have been able to gain financing for a hydroelectric project through a concession," said Luis Guillermo Gómez Atehortúa, general manager at Hidroituango.
The investment will reach $3bn and it will be built on the Cauca river, covering an area 79 km long and 700 metres wide, and at a height of 225 metres.
