Renault of France announced on Tuesday the arrival in Colombia of the first electric vehicles, in a project to study the feasibility of commercialization and mass production of such cars.
"Colombia will be Renault's first Latin American country where we have electric vehicles," said Denis Barbier, director of Renault for America.
Barbier signed two cooperation agreements with the Spanish energy giant Endesa and Empresas Publicas de Medellin (EPM) for the development of the project.
According to the French director, "The electric vehicle is a major axis of Renault's strategic plan, we work within the alliance (Japan) Nissan, and is a subject on which we have invested over 3,000 million euros."
The project means the arrival in Colombia's four electric vehicles in the second half of this year, and 250 more in 2012, will roll through the streets of Bogota and Medellin (northwest).
The agreements aim to "advance the technical, commercial, financial and legal to determine the feasibility of such vehicles, including the infrastructure development of power supply with charging points and other related services," said Renault in a statement.
The CEO of Endesa in Colombia, Luis Rubio, said developing the agreement, his company "will participate in everything that has to do with the optimization of infrastructure and the installation of charging points necessary for vehicles to run" .
Will be installed initially charging eight points in Bogotá, seven slow and one fast, "so let us do all the tests and pilot models for the advancement and development of the vehicle," said Rubio.
According to St. Germain, president of Renault Sofasa in Colombia, the idea is to bring two types of electric vehicles, the Fluence and Kangoo, the first of which with a capacity of 70 kW and the second with 44, which can reach a speed up to 135 km per hour.
Both Fluence as the Kangoo, with greater passenger capacity, have a range of 160 km when fully charged.
Renault did not say at the moment the cost that would have these vehicles, or when sold in Colombia could begin.
