New Barranquilla container terminal starts operations

In late June, the Barranquilla Container Terminal, BCT, the first of its kind at this Colombian city, will start its operations in the port area after an investment of US$ 60 million.

Alejandro Múnera, commercial manager of the BCT, pointed out that operations will start with three low profile Panamax gantry cranes, equipment which currently does not exist in Barranquilla, which will allow for great efficiency.

"We will offer services at the same level as other Caribbean and Latin American terminals," affirmed the executive.

He stressed that the port of Barranquilla needed this project, as 62% of the loads for import or export handled at the port are of local produce.

He said that the Bct will be able to handle 116,000 Teu per year, and it is estimated that around 24,000 containers will be handled in 2.013.

"It is a very positive move for the city, and we would like to stress that the terminal will generate 100 specialised jobs," added Múnera.

Most of the staff at the terminal will be technicians and highly-skilled specialists in the use of technology for container handling.

The project is the result of a joint venture between S.C. International, one of the world's largest terminal operators, and the Santa Marta Port Company through its subsidiary in Barranquilla, the North Barranquilla Port Company.

"We have invested in high-end technology that will allow clients to improve their processes in the logistics chain and stay in Barranquilla.

They will no longer need to go to other cities' terminals," concluded Alejandro Múnera.
