Angelino Garzón, Vice-president of the Republic of Colombia, who is on the Caribbean island at the invitation of the Cuban government, paid tribute to National Hero Jose Marti on Friday, at Havana’s Revolution Square.
Heading the delegation accompanying him, the top dignitary laid a wreath by the monument to the Apostle placed at the Memorial’s hall, where phrases of Marti’s humanist, patriot and Latin American thinking are on display.
As part of his agenda, and after a tour of that historic site, Garzon held official talks with Cuba’s First Vice-president Jose Ramon Machado Ventura.
The Colombian vice-president will also visit other places of scientific and cultural interest, like the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, and the city’s historic area in the Habana Vieja municipality.
On Thursday, Garzon chaired the inauguration of the Cuba-Colombia Business Forum, during which he ratified the interest of Colombian entrepreneurs to boost commercial exchanges, as well as his country’s willingness to consolidate bilateral relations in the sports and academic sectors.
Cooperation bonds between the two states have made it possible to implement the literacy teaching program Yes I Can, thanks to which more than 38,000 persons have learned how to read and write.
At present, 667 Colombian youngsters are studying several university specialties on the island, among them Medicine, Physical Education and Sports, among others.
Colombia has expressed its vote of support for the Cuban Revolution demanding the end of the unjust US blockade.
