World's Largest Emerald On Show In Colombia

The largest uncut emerald in the world has been entrancing visitors at an exhibition in Colombia, where it was discovered.

The massive gem, which weighs five pounds (2.27kg) was found 12 years ago in the Muzo mines 47m (75km) north of the capital Bogota.

Jamie Rojas, President of the Association of Emerald Producers of Colombia, said: "It is a unique piece.

"It does not make any sense to cut it when it's such a large piece, so big that it is the largest ever found in the world."

The priceless green giant called "Fura" is estimated to have 15,000 carats a one carat emerald can fetch up £60,000.

Fura has been on display at various places around the world but security fears have prevented it from being shown in its home country, until now.

Colombia, Brazil and Zambia are the world's main emerald exporters.
