Colombia returning to calm with incipient agreements

After 21 days of tension, Colombia is gradually returning to calm after the signing of various agreements with the unions protesting for the clearing of roads all over the country, although the national strike remains firm.

The weekend was decisive with meetings in Tunja and Huila on saturday and another one on sunday in Popayán, presided over by deputy president Angelino Garzón that ended with the signing of an agreement to gradually clear the roads until tomorrow.

The letter of commitment signed between the deputy leader and the farmers was an advance step and a door of hope to reach a dialogue that will allow putting an end to the crisis in the country, specially the agricultural sector.

President Juan Manuel Santos will appoint a top level commission to hold talks on the six points presented by the National Agricultural Boureau of Conversation and agreement that conclude, among other aspects, more access to the land and social investment in the rural and urban population in education, health and housing and services.

During two hours of a closed door meeting attended by leaders of the strike in 17 departments was proposed the creation of a commission of guarantors with the presence of former president Ernesto Samper and the Congress president Juan Fernando Cristo.

On wednesday the parties will meet again in Bogotá to tackle issues related with juridical and political guarantees of the process.

Despite of the fact that clearing of roads will be lifted all over the country the unions ratified that the strike and mobilization will continue until there is an agrarian reform.
