Colombia shuts out oil drillers from more rainforest land

The Colombian government has announced that the country’s Chiribiquete National Park, off limits to oil and mineral exploitation, is to be expanded to more than double its current size 2.8 million hectares.

The move means that one fifth of Colombia’s rainforest is now protected.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos made the announcement : “the expansion we have declared of the Chiribiquete National Park has at its heart a commitment to life, to sustainability and the well being of Colombians, but also to humanity.”

The jungle is home to at least 360 types of birds, 160 species of butterfly and eight primates.
