Colombian defense minister to visit Spain, France and Peru

Colombian Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera will begin on Monday a visit to Spain, where he will meet with his counterpart in that country, and a day later will be in Paris to attend a G-8 meeting, the government said on Friday in a statement.

"I'll be in Madrid on Monday to hold a bilateral meeting with my colleague, the minister of defense of Spain, Carme Chacon, and make a presentation on the Security Policy for Prosperity, led by President Juan Manuel Santos, to officials, officers and academic sector and defense security of this country," said Rivera.

The official said that in Paris he will represent Colombia at the G-8 summit, which will address the issue of illegal drugs.

Rivera said that in the G-8 summit he will present the progress of Colombia in the fight against drug trafficking and armed groups that are profiting from the sale of illegal drugs.

"We received the invitation of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, to Colombia, as a special guest to share its experience in security and in particular in the fight against the world drug problem," he said.

"A worldwide concern is increasing, and at the most powerful countries, given the problem of drugs and their impact on the financing of terrorism, and the risk that this problem poses to democratic institutions in different regions of the world," he added.

In the G-8 summit, Rivera will hold a meeting with Minister of Interior of the United Kingdom Theresa May to discuss bilateral cooperation in fight against drug trafficking.

Rivera will then travel to Lima to attend on Thursday and Friday a meeting of the South American Defense Council, which draws the defense ministers of the continent.

"There we are going to take a position to find new elements of coordination in the fight against transnational crime in the South American area," Rivera said.
