Polymer Group plans overseas expansion

Polymer Group Inc. will invest an undisclosed amount to expand its manufacturing operations in South America and China.

The Charlotte-based company says it will open two plants in southern China and Central Brazil by early 2013.

In addition, it will expand the capacity of its operations in Suzhou, China, and Cali, Colombia.

Polymer makes absorbent and disposable fabrics for medical, industrial and hygiene products.

“PGI has a proven competency expanding in the developing markets, as demonstrated by its successful establishment of new manufacturing facilities in Suzhou, China, and Cali, Colombia, in recent years,” says Chief Executive Veronica Hagen.

“We are excited about the prospect of building our presence in the Brazilian market and southern China to position ourselves to capitalize on local opportunities in these regions.”

A company spokesman declines to provide details of the investment.

Polymer Group has 14 manufacturing and converting facilities in nine countries, including a plant in Mooresville.

The company’s headquarters is in Harris Corners Business Park in north Charlotte. Polymer Group has about 3,200 employees, including 195 in Charlotte.
