Colombia sends 800 tons of melons to Europe

Taking advantage of the commercial window of the first quarter of the year in Europe, Valledupar began exporting 800 tons of Piel de Sapo melons harvested in the 36 hectares that were cultivated in development of a project launched by the firm Agricaribe in partnership with the Spanish companies Nufri and Tastam.

Forty containers will be sent in the coming days to Santa Marta's port and from there to Spain.

Agricaribe manager, Jorge Eliécer Quintero, said that in this season European fields do not produce this kind of fruit; which its consumption is high in that continent, requiring large quantities to supply the markets.

The export business of Piel de Sapo melon began after Carboandes Foundation in partnership with the Solidarity Farmers Foundation of Catalonia, the Governorship of Cesar, the SENA and the company Agricaribe, performed a pilot plan to understand the behavior of the crop in Cesar's lands.

Men are mostly involved at the stage of sowing and maintenance of melon crops, but packaging is given to women from different districts of Valledupar, including householder mothers who have learned this process.
